The art of collecting

I saw a while back a woman who collected hamburgers: pictures or hamburgers, hamburger radios, hamburger toys, whatever she could find. Another person collected anything that was red, white and blue. For me, it’s actually not a great color scheme but she seemed to like it.

Almost everyone collects something or has thoughts of collecting something. I am the same. I feel that many of us have the potential to have several collections. Some of us don’t have the money to collect what we find dear; some don’t have the space to house it. I fit in both categories.

I do, however, have a collection that I was not really aware of. It’s free and takes up no space. I collect websites.

In my Favorites tab I have so far, 23 categories and at least two sub categories. I have an average of 20 to 30 sites in each category and I continue to find more. It’s hard not to hit that “Add to Favorites” button when I come across something wonderful.

Sometimes the sites fit in more than one place like the sites in my Women, Cultures, and Goddess/Spirit categories. I have to make a choice as to where a new site should be placed.

Last month I added a new category: Blogs. I did this because many people in my Women, Art, Business or Spirit categories have great things to say and I can’t take the time to go to each site to find the blog portions. So I add that page to “Favorites” and can easily visit them from time to time.

Speaking of time, there are not enough hours in the day to visit all of my Favorites on a regular basis. So, like most collections, some of them get “dusted off” a little more than others. I sometimes find that a site has been taken down when I am finally able to visit. I go to the new URL if there is one or bid it a fond farewell and delete it, if there is not. I also do some culling of sites that I no longer find interesting, that have been abandoned, that is; have not been touched in a year or that can be outshined by a better site.

Unlike those PEZ dispensers you may have in your basement, websites as collector’s items can and do become obsolete. To me, a first edition website is not like a first edition book, unless it has information that can’t be found anywhere else (kind of like my Golden Child site).

Since I am a greedy consumer of information and beautiful art, websites are the perfect collection for me.  Have fun dusting off those PEZ dispensers.
