The gift of giving

The other day I had settled down to watch my man Obama on TV. About half an hour in, when he was on his third question the phone rang. It was one of the people I had sent a Round Tuit to.

I spoke of these in an earlier post. I had sent out several. My family’s birthdays are in a cluster so I sent them all out at once. I included this particular friend because she has cancer. I wanted to let her know that I am fighting for her in spirit and I honor her. She seemed to get the message.

When she called I at first asked her to call back after Obama had finished his news conference. But then I realized that she was more important than Obama and I told her so.

She poured out her gratitude for the gift I had sent her and told me how much it meant. She said she knew that something special was inside the package and waited until she was alone to open it. I was really touched by her feelings.

As a fellow creative you might have realized that not all people appreciate the time and energy you put into your home made cards and gifts. You don’t do it for glory and eternal gratitude. You do it because you like doing it. You like making your creations and you like sending them out to family and friends because it feels good to do it. But when someone calls and tells you they were in tears because of your kindness it is an added treasure. At least for me.

As my friend talked on I got a little flushed. “Awe shucks” didn’t seem appropriate. But I managed to remember something I read a while ago. Learn to take a compliment.

The truth is, I am not the one who deserves the compliments. She is. She was diagnosed only last year and her spirit was not diminished. She is still cheerful and hopeful for the future. She is willing to talk about her ordeal but not willing to dwell on it. I hope she knows that when she is experiencing dark days that I will still be here for her. Perhaps that’s what my little Round Tuit was meant to say.

BTW. If you think you have nothing to give anyone try visiting this site. http://www.29gifts.org/ and take the gift challenge.
