On being an art witch

Have you ever heard of a kitchen witch, or a sea witch? Ursula from Disney’s The Little Mermaid comes to mind. I used to see kitchen witch dolls and did not understand quite what they were. So I did a little research and found out a bit more regarding the different kinds of witches.

I now call myself a mystic art witch. This means I am learning to practice magick and put spells into my creations. Yes I spelled magick correctly.

According to my findings there is magic, and there is magick. Magic is popularized by Hollywood. (So is voodoo, but that’s for another blog.) Magic to my understanding, is wishing and hoping something will happen as in ‘magical thinking’. Magick is the casting of actual spells and rituals.

If you think there is a difference between magick and religious ritual, think again. When a Christian crosses themselves aren’t they casting a spell? Aren’t they warding off and protecting themselves against an evil? When church goers worship, and pray, aren’t they calling down the Gods? When people finger rosary beads, isn’t that casting a spell? That’s the way I see it.

I am not an ordained witch. I don’t have a coven. But when I prepare to make art I use my moon water or sun water to begin. I use the water to touch my third eye. I then anoint my hands since they manifest my gifts of art and writing. I light a candle and set my intention for the day, or at least part of it. Sometimes I use a rattle or bell to center myself. This is another way of calling down the creative muses. I have an alter at the top of my stairs. It has the elements of water, fire, Earth and air.

I’ve come across several amazing authors who validate my point of view. One is Najah Lightfoot who wrote Good Juju, and Powerful Juju. A second is Molly Roberts who wrote Art Magick, and a third is Amanda Hughes who wrote Mystic Storyteller.

I get a lot from these and many other books I have regarding art, magick, or both. I also get knowledge from my oracle decks. I didn’t know I was an art witch until recently. IMO it’s an awesome way to be.
